As part of the argument report (Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 in NTB 24-12 in accordance with Section 2.1 in pdf ENSI 33/649(1.39 MB) ), this document structure plan provides an overview of the different reports that play a key role in presenting central arguments and are important for understanding the safety of the deep geological repository and the suitability of the selected site. The structure reflects the varying hierarchical levels used to explain the arguments in the different reports. The level of technical detail and accuracy of each argument is tailored to the respective target audience. The reference reports, in particular, are intended for technical experts.
The central arguments that contribute to the post-closure safety (Chapter 5 in NTB 24-12) of the deep geological repository include:
- the staged, passively functioning engineered barriers
- the low hydraulic permeability of the Opalinus Clay
- the favourable sorption properties of the Opalinus Clay
- the high swelling capacity of fissures in the Opalinus Clay
- the more than sufficiently extent of the Opalinus Clay at the site
- the geologically stable situation of the site, which ensures the long-term stability of the safety-relevant properties
The central arguments in favour of selecting Nördlich Lägern as the repository site (Chapter 6 in NTB 24-12) are that it has:
